Gymnastics Mats – Gymnastics Octagon Mat

So, last time we spoke a little bit about the various types of gymnastics mats that are available for your use. I also spoke about some of the basic uses for those mats. Today I am going to continue that discussion with an explanation of the octagon mat, and its uses. Let’s get started.

The octagon mat derives its name from the number of sides it has. This is another mat that is multifaceted in it versatility for training specific gymnastics skills. The octagon mat comes in very specific sizes, each with its own specific application and use. For instance, when you are training a younger gymnast on forward rolls, or back limbers the smaller octagon is the ideal piece of equipment. Likewise when you are working with a bigger gymnast, you just use the larger octagon mat. I have found that this gymnastics mat is an effective training tool when teaching gymnasts to perform skills such as backhandsprings, front walkovers, back walkovers, forward rolls, backward rolls, and front/back limbers.

The octagon mat also comes in handy when working with cheerleaders and martial artists when teaching them the basic gymnastics skills they will need to apply to their respective sports. It is a valuable piece of equipment to have in your gymnastics, dance, martial arts, or cheerleading facility because it allows young gymnasts and cheerleaders to perform multiple repetitions of a skill while minimizing the risk of injury to the gymnast or cheerleader and the coaching staff.
