Gymnastics Mats – Gymnastics Tumbling Mats

If you have ever done or watched gymnastics, you know that it can be a dangerous sport. The skills that gymnasts perform take a great deal of practice to master. They make it look easy, but the finished product that you are seeing is the result of many hours of arduous practice and dedication.

These gymnasts have the benefit of having facilities to train in that have the necessary gymnastics equipment to safely train these skills. One of the tools that the gymnasts use to safely train is gymnastics tumbling mats. Many sports use mats when training their skills (judo, karate, cheerleading), but gymnastics tumbling mats are different in that there are mats of varying shapes and densities and each has a unique purpose.

Some of the mats are simply tumbling mats that are designed for the many repetitions gymnasts have to do when training tumbling skills. The use of mats allows for the gymnast to get in many turns practicing their skills, while minimizing the impact on the gymnast’s body. Other mats, like the incline mat or the trapezoid mat allow the gymnast to train very specific skills that may be related to tumbling or one of the other gymnastics events. These mats allow gymnastics instructors to use lead-up drills and progressions to teach the gymnast how to properly execute new skills. The use of these progressions allows the gymnastics coach to break the skill being trained into small pieces. By doing this, the gymnast can master each small skill and then assemble them to have the big skill they have been training. An example of this would be using sets, backward rolls down an incline mat, rebounds up onto stacked mats, and trampoline drills to teach a student how to do a backflip (or back salto). As you can see by the breakdown of skills above, gymnastics mats play a key part in helping gymnasts to learn new skills.

If you have a desire to learn how to do a back flip, a back handspring, or how to do a handstand, I would recommend finding a gymnastics center in your area and getting started…there is no time like the present.
